When you add new disks that haven't been zeroed to an aggregate, they are automatically zeroed before being added to the aggregate. However, this can take a long time and there is no visible indication on the system manager.
On the command line interface, type:
aggr status -r <aggregate-name>
or
sysconfig -r
Look for the aggregate and raid group in question and you should see the zeroing status:
(zeroing, 23% done)
